Despite its technical and narrative achievements, Fallout 4 lags behind its predecessors in one regard – enemies get repetitive pretty fast, and encounters tend to rely heavily on numbers to keep fights interesting.
After you’ve been prowling the Wasteland long enough, killing enemies starts to become a chore, and little by little you start realizing that you can’t keep playing the same game for years and expect it to surprise you… without mods, that is.
Given it’s been over 200 years since humanity nearly wiped itself out, biodiversity should be through the roof rather than stunted as it looks like in Fallout 4, and since Bethesda didn’t check their science before making the game, it’s up to modders to populate the Commonwealth with new and exciting creatures.
Whether you’re just getting into the game and want an augmented experience from the get-go, or a returning player hoping to experience what mods have to offer in the way of creatures, you’re sure to find something you like here.
15. Absolutely Cursed
Some mods, you look at and instantly know you’re going to install them.
That’s what I felt when I first saw Absolutely Cursed, a mod that adds an interesting new creature to the Wasteland – the Dead Head.
From the author of New Vegas' most popular companion mod, Willow - A Better Companion Experience, comes a new, complex companion for Fallout 4. Heather is a story-driven character with over 1200 lines of custom, voiced dialogue, quests, etc. Heather's unique implementation is designed to improve on the FO4 companion experience. To improve your experience making friends and influencing people in the Commonwealth, I’ve gathered a list of my favorite companion-related mods available for Fallout 4, making sure there’s something for players on every platform. Companion Infinite Ammo. Available For: PS4/PC. Check Out This Mod. Conserving ammunition is an art.
And then my game was forever cursed.
There isn’t anything quite like combat music kicking in and realizing that you’re up against hermit crabs living inside ghoul heads.
It’s like trying to induce a phobia on yourself for entertainment purposes.

14. Protected Unique Brahmin
It’s often hard for us animal lovers to play violent games where innocent wildlife may get caught in the middle of our struggle to survive.
Despite being irradiated abominations with two heads, brahmin don’t fail to activate that same caretaker instinct with their cute, absent-minded faces.
Plus I need them to poop so I can make Jet and get high off my mind.
This mod by NexusMods user HerDustIsVeryPretty helps keep your cattle healthy by making unique brahmin immortal. You can now have shootouts in your settlements to your heart’s content without worrying about your walking fertilizer factories.
13. More Realistic Cats
In the same way that brahmin risk being turned into Swiss cheese just by living in your settlements, so do cats often find themselves caught in the line of fire.
But cats are smart, right? Surely they’d be able to avoid the carnage.
Well, modder and fellow cat-lover Greslin was quick to realize that vanilla cats in Fallout 4 are little more than slow-moving targets too stupid to flee or get to cover.
Greslin fixed this by tweaking their behavioral tendencies a bit, making them smarter and avoidant of combat… and just in case, they also have more health. Protect the kitties!
12. Nightstrikers
While generally not an issue, Fallout 4 doesn’t quite have the same enemy variety some other open-world games have.
Modder Shadowliger decided that their humble contribution to improving biodiversity in the Commonwealth would be to create the local version of Nightstalkers from Fallout: New Vegas.
They called it the Nightstriker, a poisonous irradiated coyote that can really mean trouble if you’re not on top of your game.
There’s five different variants of the beast, as well as a Nightstriker companion waiting to be discovered somewhere in the Wasteland.
11. Commonwealth Critters
Among the best ways to make an open-world feel alive and realistic is filling it with wildlife just doing its own thing, not necessarily interacting with the player.
This can be resource-heavy, so, understandably, Fallout 4 developers didn’t put much emphasis on this detail.
Since nowadays most gaming PCs can run the game perfectly, modder Giggilymoeromicon thought it was high time the Wasteland was repopulated, so they added several spawn points all over the Commonwealth for small passive animals to do just that.
10. Institute Centaurs
Bethesda had many creatures planned for Fallout 4 that never really made it into the game.
Among them were the Institute Centaurs, which have nothing to do with what you’re thinking about when you hear the word “centaur”.
Modder TheFriedTurkey, along with their team, decided to bring this scrapped content back from the trashcan, making new models, textures, and animations to bring it to life.
The result is a horribly deformed, badly spliced abomination that looks just like the one in Fallout 4’s concept art. Charming.
9. Gojira 2.5 – Standalone Giant Deathclaw
If you want to add a new formidable enemy but aren’t quite fond of the “Please kill me now” vibe the Institute Centaurs give off, perhaps you should consider introducing some kaiju goodness into your Wasteland.
This mod by creator Neeher adds a new Legendary Deathclaw named after the Japanese version of Godzilla – Gojira.
This name makes more sense once you see its size, which is seven times that of a regular deathclaw.
This towering beast presents a serious challenge to anyone not armed with a Fat Man or something of the sort, and the way it randomly spawns at any point while exploring the Wasteland makes it feel just like being attacked by a dragon in Skyrim.
8. Plutonium Creatures
Seeking to add both new challenges and more variety to Fallout 4, modder Hopper31 created an entirely new tier of enemies – Plutonium Creatures.
These orange-glowing horrors are what happens when a regular glowing variant comes into contact with a municipal plutonium well, becoming even stronger.
There are currently 20 plutonium creatures, and while they’re effectively OP when compared to their normal counterparts, they also won’t start spawning until several levels later.
This way they’ll be a challenge without completely breaking your game.
7. Glowing Animals Emit Light
A perfect companion mod for Plutonium Creatures is Glowing Animals Emit Light by MM137, an add-on that turns glowing variants of creatures into light sources, as they should always have been.
This will make fighting strong enemies in the darkness a much more immersive experience, albeit a somewhat easier one as well.
Getting mauled at midnight by a radioactive Yao Guai had never looked this cool.

6. More Deathclaw Variety
Deathclaws have always been beautiful killing machines that never fail to rip me to shreds when I get distracted admiring the spiky beauty of their being.
Modder Hopper31 apparently agrees, so they decided to add over 20 new varieties of deathclaw into the game – all using only vanilla assets.
Red Deathclaws, Glowing Deathclaws, and even Albino Deathclaws may now come out at any moment to separate you from your limbs in style – and you’ll be thankful for the spectacle.
5. Crows and Creatures
Of course, there’s no point in upgrading deathclaws if you’re going to leave everything else the same.
Instead of adding more variety, modder Xazomn decided to upgrade the textures of every creature in the Wasteland so they look more detailed and, in consequence, lifelike.
Gone are the days of playdoh models of radioactive dogs with shiny, beady eyes trying to kill you.
Now you can get disemboweled by a pack of abominations without breaking your immersion.
4. True Legendary Enemies
Are you tired of “legendary” enemies having boring, run-of-the-mill names like “Legendary Thingamabob” instead of something special?
Don’t legends have proper names?
Modder Pwnstar fixes that by giving each and every Legendary enemy in the Wasteland either an epic, intimidating name or something a little more lighthearted.
I’ll never forget my first encounter with Dominatrix Alpha, the Legendary Assaultron, and I still get fits of laughter when remembering the time I faced a Radroach called Gorbash The Devourer.
3. Deadlier Deathclaws
Deathclaws look terrifying and are fittingly strong as hell when you first encounter them in the Commonwealth, but once you get the hang of things, such events become underwhelming.
Creator Mpankey decided to fix this by buffing these Dragons of The Wasteland considerably – as well as adding stronger varieties such as the Quantum Deathclaws that were cut from the Nuka World DLC.
If you want to test out just how much stronger they are, head to the hills west of the Glowing Sea, where you’ll find a cave overrun with deathclaws that’s appropriately called The Devil’s Den.
2. D.E.C.A.Y – Better Ghouls
Among the most common enemies in Fallout 4 are feral ghouls, former humans turned into quasi-immortal mindless shells, gone crazy due to hunger and suffering.
With such a horrible backstory, it’s kind of underwhelming just how leathery and old they look.
To fix this, modder Thumblesteen replaced their textures and models with something reflecting decay rather than mummification.
Now, these radioactive zombies feature exposed bones, skin mold, missing limbs, and much more – all in glorious 2K textures.
1. Respawnable Legendary Bosses and Hard Legendary Giant Creatures
After playing the game several times and experiencing the godly powers of maxed-out characters, most of us start finding the vanilla creatures and bosses increasingly boring.
To keep things spicy for seasoned players, modder Charrisx decided to place many respawnable Legendary creatures hidden throughout the Commonwealth so that there’s never a dull moment in your adventure.
This mod adds 27 unique bosses, including a bunch of giant abominations that’ll make you feel as if you’re playing Monster Hunter World.

For a lot of people, it’s amazing that even after five years of its official release Fallout 4 remains one of the most played and talked-about open-world games.
However, take a quick look at Fallout 4’s NexusMods page and it’s easy to understand the reason.
The community built around Fallout 4 has continued putting out content on the regular ever since its release, becoming more sophisticated as time goes by.
Nowadays even the smaller quest mods can add over an hour of gameplay.
The bigger ones? They might as well get bought out by Bethesda to be released as entirely new, full-priced games!
Luckily for us, most modders don’t pursue such lines of thinking. And we have a wide array of new storylines to pursue in Fallout 4’s Wasteland.
To bring more attention to some of the most amazing expansions the game has seen to date, I decided to put together this ranking and I really hope you find something you like out of it.
15. NVIDIA’s Vault 1080
NVIDIA’s Vault 1080 by modder Ex0dus13 is a joint venture between Nvidia and Vault-Tec to show off new ways to handle volumetric lighting.
Which, if you didn’t know, is used in-game to create a wonderfully moody atmosphere.
As such, the mod includes a questline where light will play an important role in leading you through a dilapidated church as you uncover the truth about a dark and twisted religious congregation and their fall from grace.
14. Fallout Who
Doctor Who is one of those things that, no matter what you mix it with, it’ll turn out amazing.
So long as the work is put in to make it just incredible, of course.
Modder Demeggy has certainly put in the effort to make an amazing Doctor Who mod that’ll see you uncovering your heritage as a Gallifreyan Time Lord, exiled to a post-apocalyptic Earth to live out your days.
In this mod, what you’re really aiming for is the rewards. Which include a Sonic Screwdriver multi-tool, Time Lord abilities and yes, a TARDIS that serves as a player home that is bigger on the inside.
13. Vault 494 – A Vault-Tec Story
Somewhere in the Nahant area lies Vault 494, an as-of-yet undiscovered survival capsule where Vault-Tec expected to research the creation of a crime-free society.
With over an hour of content and scripted events, Vault 494 by modder Seddo4494 is a story of intrigue and tragedy where you’ll get to see how the occupants struggled to achieve their objectives while being undermined by a most silent saboteur – human nature.
12. The Collector’s Guides
This mod by Elys is a simple one, but also a great improvement for those of us who suck at finding collectibles.
It provides a series of in-game guides that lead you to collectibles such as magazines and bobbleheads. Just read one of them and you’ll be directed to the items on the list.
11. Atomic Radio and Tales from The Commonwealth
I love listening to the radio in Fallout 4.
It’s one of the most immersive things to do on your off-time while planning your next move or moving towards it.
And it staves off the maddening loneliness that comes with wandering the Wasteland.
Atomic Radio and Tales from The Commonwealth by NexusMods user KrisTakahashi offers you the opportunity to dive into the lives of the Wasteland’s inhabitants in a way you never have before, all complemented by a new pre-war radio channel with 5 hours’ worth of lore-friendly content.
Will you help the baseball team trying to ascend to heaven through their score?

Perhaps you’ll just sit down and listen to the radio as the world goes by…
10. Maxwell’s World
Whereas normal people generally play horror games when they’re craving some adrenaline, I prefer to hit the Nexus and find a mod to wreck my nerves.
If you’re looking for the same thing then you can’t pass up this fully-voiced haunted amusement park story by modder Trainwiz.
In Maxwell’s World, nothing is as it seems… or perhaps everything is, considering it’s all spooky as hell.
Battle disembodied entities and crazed zombies with new weapons like the Heavy Incinerator or the Fireworks Cannon as you make your way to one of the multiple endings.
9. Ransacked Relays and Shuddersome Subways
Also from the mind of Trainwiz comes Ransacked Relays and Shuddersome Subways, two inter-connected questlines featuring new locations, unique bosses and a riveting storyline.
I can’t say too much about these quests without spoiling the story for you, but if facing an insane AI controlling teleporters or impaling a Mirelurk Queen with a train sounds like your kind of thing… I’m sure you’ll enjoy this a lot.
8. Operation Manhattan – New York
Some of us just couldn’t get enough of the Brotherhood of Steel during the game’s main quest.
Modder AlxRam was one such person, so they decided to create a whole new high-level BoS-oriented questline to satiate that thirst for camaraderie and Power Armors.
Operation Manhattan will have you fighting supermutants, along with heavily armed Raiders and Gunners through Central Park, Manhattan and even the city’s subway to rescue a fellow soldier.
It’s like Saving Private Ryan with a lot more radiation.
7. 50 Ways to Die at Dr. Nick’s
If finding death and destruction around every corner is what you’re into, then you’ll feel right at home playing 50 Ways to Die at Dr. Nick’s.
With 10 connected quests featuring puzzles, mysteries, plot-twists and a lot of explosions, this mod by prolific creator Rbdcc12 has become a classic in the modding community.
Even after clearing the storyline, your game will remain forever improved by the unique rewards.
These include your new player home with very detailed decoration, and lots of new craftables with… interesting effects.
6. Project Valkyrie
While I enjoy little self-contained adventures as much as the next guy, I get especially excited for mods that connect to the game’s main storyline and change my experience in ways I would never have expected.
Fallout 4 More Companions Mod 1.12.2
That’s exactly what Project Valkyrie by Thuggysmurf does, opening the way to four completely new endings for the game’s main quest.
Fallout 4 Mods Multiple Companions
Break the bindings of fate by brokering a peace between the BoS and the Institute. Or better yet, imprison Preston Garvey shortly after you meet him. It’s your choice.
And that’s only the tip of the iceberg that is this mod, which features over five hours of gameplay, four fully-voiced companions that interact with the story, and the possibility to completely overhaul the Institute once you become Director.
5. America Rising – A Tale of The Enclave
You’ve just woken up from 200 years in stasis, and the world as you know it has ceased to exist. As you try to piece together what’s happened, you realize you’re not alone.
There are others like you out there, trying to take back what was lost – the Enclave.
Modder Otellino offers players with a soft spot for the most conservative group in the Wasteland a chance to re-connect in a mod that’s seamlessly integrated into the game, featuring hours of gameplay, two fully-voiced companions, and a sweet player home sitting on an abandoned oil rig.
4. Depravity – A Harmless Bit of Fun
Self-described as the largest quest and companion mod ever, Depravity offers players the opportunity to play a truly evil Sole Survivor in over 10 hours of absurd gameplay.
The mod, by creator ThuggySmurf, includes 20 interconnected quests, seven fully-voiced companions to escort you through them, and some of the most detailed player bases around.
Where Project Valkyrie offers you a new way to finish the game, Depravity is meant to give you more freedom in how you play the opening act.
3. Fusion City Rising
Fusion City Rising is both a quest mod and a complete expansion of Diamond City, allowing you to enter its seedy underbelly.
While it does feature several hours of gameplay, fully-voiced companions and the possibility to blow up a bunch of stuff with nuclear weapons, that’s not what makes this mod special.
Fallout 4 More Companions Mod 1.8.9
Rather it’s the setting of Fusion City that really takes center stage.
Lose yourself in the largest underground community in the Commonwealth, larger than Diamond City itself.
Go shopping at the mall, train in its shooting ranges, get acquainted with the local factions and, when you’re looking for a bit of fun, visit Club Fusion to party like it’s 2077.
2. Outcasts and Remnants
This mod by ThuggySmurf opens the doors to over 20 hours of engaging gameplay that’ll have you interacting with leftovers from the main factions in the vanilla game.
Exiles from the Brotherhood of Steel, Vault-Tec survivors and even remnants from Fallout 3’s Enclave star in this ambitious expansion.
Explore new locations, claim new player homes and befriend two fully-voiced custom companions as you get to know the Outcasts and Remnants.

1. The Machine and Her
The Machine and Her by NikaCola is a gigantic quest mod with over five hours of immersive gameplay.
This also includes an enthralling custom soundtrack and an entirely new radio station with over 50 tracks and a fully-voiced DJ.
Really, this is big.
The mod and its story are centered around Kit, one of the most complex custom companions in Fallout 4 history.
Not only does she have over 6,000 lines of dialogue, but also an AI that can take orders and implement strategies set by the player.
This new follower will accompany you all throughout this story, judging your actions based on how much she trusts you, and how cynical she thinks you are.
Will you show her not all survivors are the same? Or will you remind her it’s a dog-eat-dog world out there?
